Final Response

Write a literature response to The Revealers showing how and when you used the reading strategies of reflecting, predicting, questioning, summarizing , and visualizing in your reading of the novel. Include page numbers for examples from the text. Refer to your Daybook if you need a review of the strategies.

Reflecting while reading this book is a necessary thing because in this book the story didn't go as smooth as other books we read. This was a story where you had to think more. When I was reading this story, reflecting just automatically happend. This was because the book gave you a lot to think about. For example when Russell started questioning Richie in the boiler room(pg.143), I thought maybe he should't have done that. Maybe he should have just asked him simple questions. And those questions made me go back and read why he asked those questions. These reflections kept on happening around the book where the most interesting parts were. Predicting was the most easy and fun thing to do. Predicting in this book made the book more fun. When my prediction comes true, I would be pleased and when my prediction didn't come true, I would not be disappointed but more interested in the book. I was predicting that Bethany set Russell, Elliot and Catalina up(pg.150. When my prediction was right, I got excited and started reading with more enthusiasm. Questioning the text helped with my reflections. As I said before when I questioned the text, I would have to answer that question by reflecting. I questioned this text a lot because there were some parts I didn't understand. By questioning the text it helped me to understand the book better and it made the book more fun. After each chapter, I would summarize the chapter. I would do this because I needed the information from the chapter to go on to the next. Or else it would be hard to understand the rest of the book. When main events happend, I would go back and summarize. When Elliot was tossed off the bridge,(pg.59) and when he said "You suck Brown, you all suck!" This helped me summarize that chapter because that was the main event of the chapter, and that sentence was the main point of the chapter. Visualizing was the most fun because you can make up your own perspective of the story. Your own point of view. When Richie poored root beer on Russell(pg.15) I saw a tall guy with a cigarette in his mouth, with a thick leather jacket pouring root beer on a small kid. But my own point of view of the characters changed as the story went on. When Richie bought Russell a root beer on pg.205, I saw the same physical guy, but a heart, a nice, kind heart. Visualizing made the story a lot more fun. All these reading strategies made the story much more fun and entertaining.

Revealers-Perspective My self as Elliot

Envision yourself as Russell, Elliot, or Catlina. Describe how you would feel and react to the bullies in the story.

Response: If I was in Elliot's situation I would first try and figure out solutions to the problem. Instead Elliot just ignored everyone and went on with his daily life(pg.18). I think that is a bad decision to make. If you don't react and just ignore what is happening around you, the people that are bothering you would think that it is okay to bother you because you don't do anything. That is what happened to Elliot and if I was Elliot I would have acted differently. If I was Elliot I would first try and figure out why he was being bothered. Then like Catalina said, I would slowly approach the problem(pg.38). If that didn't work and things got more complicated like on pg.59 where situations got out of hands when Eliiot was thrown off the bridge. When the situation gets to that kind of levels, I would and everyone should tell their parents. If things don't get that much out of hands, I would have courage and go up to them and tell them to stop. "I don't know what got into me, but i said, "You figure you can go pushing people around and that makes you so great. Is that all you can do, act like a tough guy? Is that it?"(pg.143) In this paragraph Russell stands up to his enemy. That takes a lot of courage. Something I wouldn't be able to do normally. But if I was Elliot and I got bullied like him, I would stand up to my enemy and tell him to stop.

Novel connection. When Richie punches Russell in the face, his mother wants to call the principal, however, Russell wants to keep quiet about the whole incident. Russell’s mom’s response was, “I’m not doing nothing. If one adult did this to another, he'd be in jail. Why should it be different for kids?” (p. 45)

Blog Question: Should kids solve their own problems or should adults/parents get involved? Explain.

Answer: I think that the kids should solve their own problem because kids have to learn how to solve complications of life. If parents get involved, kids would never learn to solve their own problem when they grow up. Russell found out some solutions by thinking and asking some experts. He decided to take a scientific approach(pg.47).Russell is a good example of what kids should do when there are problem in life. He thought about solutions and then asked experts what he should do. Sometimes parents should get involved too. If situations get out of hands, parents should come in and solve the problem. "They were leaning down grappling and I got there just as Elliot, his hands grabbing upward and his face wide open, came loose and fell away."(pg.59). Situations like this example from the book, is where parents should come in and help the kids. If parents don't help their child in these situations, the kids might get harmed or hurt, and I don't think parents would like that. If I was Russell I would do what he did because that was a brave thing to do. To stand in front of his enemy and face him. I think that takes a lot of courage. Kids should have that courage and face their own problems instead of going to their parents.
